VERY nice guy, but did bait-and-switch on the phone.

I called and asked how much the smog check was – he said “$45”. I then said “Plus the $9 for the certificate, right?” He replied “Yes, plus the $8.25.” So, I printed the $20 off coupon, and an hour later I drove over there.

Again – he’s a very nice older guy. He asked for my paperwork. I handed him the DMV renewal paper *AND* the printed $20 coupon – 2 pages. He took them both and completed the smog check. (Which passed with no issues.)

When it was time to pay, the total came to $47. He did not apply the $20 coupon. ($45 smog + $9 cert. = $54 – $20 coupon = $34) When I showed him the coupon again, he said the he already applied it. To which I said that it should be about $35 then. He said no, that the regular price is $75 for a smog check.

I said “I called you an hour ago and asked for the price, and you told me $45. Then I asked you if that included the certificate cost.” He then said that he gave me the discounted price on the phone.

I argued further that he did NOT say it was a special price, or that he was giving a discount. He said that it was a special ‘just for today’ (OBVIOUSLY not true!) I told him that he needed to be honest when customers call. He got very upset and told me that he was honest. I told him that he was NOT being honest. Then he said he “forgot” to mention that it was a special today.

I told him he needed to be truthful when talking to customers in the future, or that it makes him sound like a cheat.

I had brought $40 cash (I NEVER carry cash), and told him that he’d need to take my credit card then. He grudgingly took it, charged my card, and we were done.

He really was a nice, friendly guy – until it came out that the price suddenly changed.

Suggestion: Just go somewhere else.
